The Hoxie Mustangs defeated Black Rock 67-59 in the championship game of the senior boys division of the 2009 Lawrence County Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Lynn.
The Mustangs started strong in the first half, leading 17-12 after one quarter and 38-25 at halftime.
Black Rock climbed back into the contest, outscoring the Mustangs 16-6 in the third quarter to cut Hoxie's lead to 44-41 heading into the final period. Black Rock had closed to within 55-53 when Hoxie's Cade Crisler drained three consecutive three-pointers to dash the Zebras comeback hopes.
Crisler finished with a game-high 17 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Hoxie in scoring. Two Mustangs recorded double-doubles. Beau Sisco scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Justin Weitkamp had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan Puckett scored 13 points, and Coy Yasler added 12 for Hoxie.
For Black Rock, Les Foster had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tadd Fore and Ben Walker also scored 13 points apiece for the Zebras. Tyler Roby had seven points, and J.J. Nunally added six. Garrett Maronde finished with five points, and Joe Paul Carey scored two.
