WR teams defeat SalemNathan HibbardStaff Writer Melbourne's Lady Bearkatz outlasted Walnut Ridge to claim a 71-66 overtime victory in senior girls basketball Friday night at Sharum Gymnasium. With the Lady Bobcats clinging to a 62-59 lead, Melbourne's Maggie Caraway canned a three-pointer in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. Melbourne outscored Walnut Ridge 9-4 in the extra period to earn the win. Ashley Baker scored 17 points to lead Walnut Ridge. Lacey Cobble had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Carrie Massey and Alivia Hackworth each scored 12 points. Maggie Cooper finished with 33 points to lead Melbourne. Melbourne won the junior girls game 37-32.
The Melbourne Bearkatz defeated Walnut Ridge 52-29 in the senior boys contest. Wesley Davis led Walnut Ridge with 10 points.
Baker scored 23 points to lead the Lady Bobcats to a 69-57 win over Salem Jan. 6 at Walnut Ridge. The Lady Cats led 16-9 after the first quarter, 38-22 at halftime and 55-38 after three periods. Hackworth and Cobble each added 14 points for Walnut Ridge. The Lady Bobcats improved to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in 2A-2 conference play.
Walnut Ridge defeated Salem 64-59 in senior boys action. Brandon Dawson led the Bobcats in scoring with 22 points. Davis had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Dickson had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Bennett Dudley had 11 points. Walnut Ridge improved to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in 2A-2 conference play.
