Hillcrest advances to
NEA quarterfinals

Buffalo Island Central defeated Hillcrest 72-62 in the quarterfinal round of the NEA Tournament on Saturday night at Jonesboro.

BIC led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and pulled away in the second period for a 37-21 halftime lead.

The Mustangs carried a 49-36 advantage into the final quarter and withstood a Hillcrest rally, which brought the Screamin' Eagles to within 55-48 at one point.

Hillcrest's comeback effort was hampered by poor free throw shooting, as the Eagles shot only 5-of-13 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

Trevor Morgan finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to lead Hillcrest. Derek Wooten added 14 points, while Dylan Wooten and Jordan Hunter each scored 10 points.

East Poinsett County

The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles upset the second-seeded East Poinsett County Warriors 78-69 Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NEA Tournament.

Hillcrest jumped in front early and led 26-16 at the end of the first quarter and 44-32 at halftime.

EPC's Ky Madden led the Warriors on a second-half comeback, in which they tied the game 62-62 with 4:31 to play. Madden finished with 36 points for the Warriors, but fouled out with 3:31 to play, and the Screamin' Eagles were able to pull away in the final minutes.

Derek Wooten led Hillcrest with 29 points, and Hunter had 18 points. Wooten and Hunter each hit four 3-pointers for the Eagles. Logan Spray and Trevor Morgan each had 10 points, and Dylan Wooten added nine.

After finding success in the opening round of the NEA Tournament, Lawrence County teams didn't fare as well on Dec. 22.

Senior girls
Hillcrest ~ Rector

Rector's Hillary Calhoun poured in 26 points to lead the Lady Cougars past the Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles 68-63 in the second round of the tournament.

Breanna Doyle led the Lady Screamin' Eagles with 16 points, and Lauren Pickle added 14.

WR ~ Riverside

Riverside's Lady Rebels defeated the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats 62-47 in a second-round matchup on Monday.

The game was tied 26-26 at halftime, before Riverside outscored the Lady Cats 20-9 in the third period to pull away.

Ashley Baker scored 19 points, and Alivia Hackworth added 13 for Walnut Ridge.

BR ~ Manila

The Manila Lady Lions defeated Black Rock 55-44 in the second round on Monday. Teri Aden led the Lady Zebras with 13 points.

S-H ~ Tuckerman

Tuckerman's Lady Bulldogs defeated Sloan-Hendrix 57-40 in the second round on Monday.

Kristin Belcher had 13 points for the Lady Hounds, and Kara Morris scored 10.

Senior Boys
WR ~ Marmaduke

The Marmaduke Greyhounds outscored Walnut Ridge 28-11 in the fourth quarter to slip past the Bobcats 65-62 in a first-round game of the NEA Tournament on Monday.

Walnut Ridge held the advantage for most of the game, leading 18-14 after the first quarter, 33-27 at halftime and 51-37 at the end of the third period.

Wesley Davis led the Cats with 15 points. Bennett Dudley scored 14 points. Chris Dickson had 13, and Brandon Dawson added 10.

BR ~ Cedar Ridge

Cedar Ridge defeated the Black Rock Zebras 53-45 in the NEA Tournament on Monday.

The Zebras led 18-13 at the end of the first period, but the Timberwolves came back in the second period to take a 27-24 lead at halftime. Cedar Ridge extended their lead to 41-32 after three periods.

Joe Paul Carey led Black Rock with 20 points.
