The Kiwanis Club helped spread cheer again this year by providing Christmas gifts totaling $1,500 for students and clients of the Lawrence County Cooperative School in Portia. Kiwanians also made several other year-end donations to other worthy projects in the area.
Purchasing gifts for the Cooperative School has been an ongoing project of the club for more than 30 years. Kiwanis member Phil Clark has been involved with this project as chairman for 32 years.
It is a toss up as to whether the school's clients or the Kiwanis members receive more happiness from the experience. "A lot of people take Christmas for granted but not these children and adults," Clark said of the school clients.
Santa handed out the gifts to the clients during the Cooperative School's annual Christmas party held this year on Dec. 19. Several Kiwanians were present to assist in distributing and assembling the gifts.
The Kiwanis Club also made the following monetary donations in December:
- $1,000 to Shepherd Care clothing ministry to match other donations made in December.
- $500 to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children).
- $500 to the Children's Shelter.
- $1,500 to the Lawrence County Cooperative School's Mail-A-Thon.
- $500 to the Walnut Ridge School Benevolent Fund.
The Kiwanis Club, with assistance from the Walnut Ridge High School Key Club, holds two fund-raisers a year. They hold a pancake breakfast in the spring and a radio auction in the fall. These fund-raisers enable them to assist with the above projects, as well as others during the year.
