LawCo. teams fare well in NEA
Staff Writer Lawrence County teams made a strong showing in the first round of the NEA Tournament over the weekend, earning six wins in the seven games played by county teams. The Walnut Ridge senior boys' first-round game against Marmaduke was scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m.
Hillcrest ~ Barton The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles jumped out to a big lead early in their game against Barton and cruised to a 65-33 victory on Satuday. Hillcrest led 20-9 after one quarter, 24-11 at halftime and 42-24 after three periods. Samantha Blevins led Hillcrest with 17 points. Lauren Pickle scored 13 points, and Breanna Doyle added 12.
The Black Rock Lady Zebras dominated Marked Tree in the second and third periods to post a 63-47 victory on Saturday. Black Rock led just 15-14 after one quarter, but outscored the Lady Indians 21-7 in the second quarter and 17-9 in the third to carry a 53-30 lead into the final period. Amy Galbreath scored 20 points for Black Rock. Ashley Stallings had 11 points, and Teri Aden added 10.
The Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds defeated Armorel 42-33 to earn a first-round win on Saturday. Hannah Rowsey led Sloan-Hendrix with 12 points. Kristin Belcher scored 11 points and Latricia Mans added 10 for the Lady Hounds.
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats outscored McCrory 21-11 in the fourth quarter to break open a close contest and defeat the Lady Jaguars 59-47 in NEA Tournament action on Saturday. The Lady Bobcats led 27-26 at halftime and 38-36 after three quarters. Alivia Hackworth led Walnut Ridge with 19 points, and Ashley Baker added 15.
BR ~ Weiner Black Rock defeated Weiner 52-39 in the first-round of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament Friday at Jonesboro. Black Rock led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, 27-23 at halftime and 39-32 after three periods. Les Foster led the Zebras with 16 points. Joe Paul Carey scored 15 points, and Hunter Horton grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles used a fourth-quarter surge to defeat Manila 64-59 in the first round of the NEA Tournament Saturday at Jonesboro. Hillcrest trailed by four points after three periods, but outscored the Lions 27-18 in the final period to claim the win. Jordan Hunter led the Eagles with 26 points, and Derek Wooten scored 25.
Rivercrest scored the game's first 14 points and went on to defeat Sloan-Hendrix 81-58 Saturday. The Greyhounds were within 10 points at haltime, trailing 42-32 at the break, but the Colts were able to pull away in the second half for the win. Sloan-Hendrix was led by Tyler Gillean with 13 points. Chad Orrick and Chase DeJournett each scored 12 points.
