Mustangs defeat Corning
The Hoxie Mustangs avenged their only loss of the season and remained perfect in 3A-3 conference play with an 81-74 victory over Corning in senior boys basketball Friday night at Hicks Gymnasium.
Hoxie led 15-14 after one quarter and extended their lead to 38-28 at halftime behind Morgan Puckett's 10 second-period points.
Corning, who defeated Hoxie in the semifinals of the WBC Tournament, came out strong after halftime and outscored the Mustangs 26-16 in the third quarter to tie the game 54-54 after three quarters. The teams played an even fourth period as regulation play ended with the score tied 69-69.
Nate Ragsdell scored nine of the Hoxie's 12 points in the overtime period, as the Mustangs pulled away for the win.
Puckett led the Mustangs in scoring with 20 points. Justin Weitkamp had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ragsdell finished with 17 points, and Coy Yasler added 14.
Hoxie improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
The Hoxie junior high boys improved to 3-1 on the season with a 35-21 victory over Corning.
Hoxie was in front the entire game, leading 10-2 after the first quarter, 17-5 at halftime and 25-10 after three periods.
Devin Roberts led the Mustangs with nine points and eight rebounds. Zach Crisler scored nine points, and Tyler Hall and Kyle Stafford each added four points.
The Hoxie seventh-grade boys defeated Corning 36-24.
Hunter Keeling led the Mustangs in scoring with nine points, and Dillion Cagle chipped in eight. Slade Sullens and Garrett Crisler each had six points, and Robert Vaughn added four for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-0 on the year.
Cade Crisler sank two free throws in the final seconds to give the Hoxie Mustangs a hard-earned 77-75 victory over the Rivercrest Colts in senior boys basketball on Dec. 8 at Hoxie.
Rivercrest's press forced the Mustangs into numerous turnovers early in the game, as the Colts took a 19-17 lead at the end of the first period. Hoxie began to handle Rivercrest's pressure in the second period and moved into a 34-32 lead at halftime.
Hoxie continued to hold a slim lead at 54-53 after three quarters, as Ragsdell poured in 15 points in the period. The Mustangs converted several clutch free throws down the stretch, including nine-of-12 from Crisler, to hold on for the win.
Ragsdell led all scorers with 23 points and had nine rebounds. Crisler finished with 18 points, and Weitkamp had 12. Puckett and Yasler scored nine points apiece, and Yasler pulled down nine rebounds.
The Hoxie junior high boys outscored Rivercrest 16-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 44-40 win.
Roberts recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Zach Crisler finished with 19 points and seven assists.
The Hoxie seventh-grade boys defeated Rivercrest 28-25.
Sullens led Hoxie with 18 points. Cagle had five points, and Vaughn added four.
