House gives update
on Hwy. 67 progress

Don House of Walnut Ridge, member of the Good Roads Arkansas Transportation Board of Directors, was in Little Rock last week to attend a quarterly board meeting. House met privately with Arkansas Highway and Transportation Director Dan Flowers and Commissioner John Ed Reginold.

House, said that Highway 67 construction to Walnut Ridge and Hoxie remains on schedule. Highway 67 is presently under construction in one form or another all the way from Newport to Walnut Ridge/Hoxie.

"Because so much of the highway is cutting through rural areas far from existing highways, the general public is not seeing the progress," House said. The highway is complete from Newport to Tuckerman and is all but complete to the Swifton area. These two stretches of Hwy. 67 are expected to open in the spring of 2009.

The stretch from Highway 226 east of Swifton to Walnut Ridge/Hoxie is also under construction with the most recent bid being let from Highway 230 east of Alicia to Walnut Ridge/Hoxie. Each segment has multiple bid lettings.

On Monday, House met by invitation with highway officials in Poplar Bluff regarding Hwy. 67 in Missouri. "Missouri is making excellent progress on a multi-lane super rural highway from Fredericktown to Poplar Bluff. However, it is not being built to interstate specifications," House added.

"Governor Mike Beebe and the Arkansas Highway Commission appear to be totally committed to continuing an interstate designed highway all the way to the Missouri state line," said House. "A four-lane highway from Pocahontas to Corning versus the interstate-spec highway from Walnut Ridge, seemingly has weak support in Little Rock."

House said it is imperative that leaders from Clay, Randolph, Greene and Lawrence counties continue to present a united front of support in getting the Hwy. 67 freeway completed as early as possible.

"Regardless as to how the plans pan out, Walnut Ridge/Hoxie are in an excellent position," he added.
