Lawrence County voters decided several races during Tuesday's General Election, according to unofficial results released by Lawrence County Clerk Tina Stowers.

Lawrence County experienced a 57 percent voter turnout, with 2,173 of the 5,960 ballots being cast in early and absentee voting.

Democrat Craig Stone, incumbent justice of the peace for District 9, was re-elected defeating his Republican challenger, Lloyd Clark, by a vote of 345 (59%) to 242 (41%).

In the lone constable race, Republican Bryan Smith won the Black Rock Township seat, defeating Democrat J.D. Johnson by a vote of 281 (62%) to 171 (38%).

Municipal races

Voting in municipal races was as follows:

Alicia Alderman Position 1 ~ Rose Ehrhardt, 23 (56%); Melba Verke, 18 (44%).

Alicia Alderman Position 5 ~ Marvin Reynolds, 26 (62%); Shirley Nettles, 16 (38%).

Hoxie Alderman Ward 1 Position 2 ~ Dennis Coggins, 387 (48%); James E. Kirksey, 325 (40%); Tommy Kingsland, 91 (11%). Coggins and Kirksey will be in a runoff.

Hoxie Alderman Ward 2 Position 1 ~ Richard Combs, 306 (38%); Marty Harris, 173 (22%); John Stowers Sr., 147 (18%); John Jordan, 125 (16%); David Baird, 49 (6%). Combs and Harris will be in a runoff.

Hoxie Alderman Ward 2 Position 2 ~ Karen Williams, 427 (51%); Kenny Franks, 307 (37%); Juanita Viola Madden, 99 (12%).

Hoxie Alderman Ward 3 Position 1 ~ Kenneth Quarry, 412 (51%); Peggy Miles, 295 (37%); Lloyd Kingsland, 97 (12%).

Hoxie Alderman Ward 3 Position 2 ~ Adam Pratt, 507 (65%); Harold L. Hayes Jr., 277 (35%).

Portia Alderman Position 3 ~ Kelly Duckworth, 112 (67%); Carl Herring, 54 (33%).

Ravenden Alderman Position 4 ~ Donna L. Bartlett, 81 (60%); Sherry Henson, 55 (40%).

Sedgwick Alderman Position 1 ~ Donna Gandy, 45 (62.5%); Beverly Fowler, 27 (37.5%)

Walnut Ridge Alderman Ward 1 Position 1 ~ Wendell Steven Jones, 984 (60%); Rickey Ditto, 667 (40%).

Walnut Ridge Alderman Ward 1 Position 2 ~ Paula Haskins, 870 (52%); Allen Smith, 800 (48%).

Walnut Ridge Alderman Ward 2 Position 1 ~ Jonathan Sanders, 941 (56%); Corbet L. Clark III, 753 (44%).

Walnut Ridge Alderman Ward 3 Position 2 ~ Dirk Davis, 843 (50.36%); Millard Allison, 831 (49.64%).

Walnut Ridge Alderman Ward 4 Position 2 ~ Johnnie Harold Fears, 862 (50.44%); Daniel Abbott, 847 (49.56%).

State and federal races and issues

State Rep. J.R. Rogers, Democrat, was re-elected to his position as State Representative for District 73. In Lawrence County he received 3,593 votes (62%), while his Republican challenger, Chad Moseley, received 2,207 votes (38%).

U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, Democrat, also won re-election. Lawrence County voters cast 4,801 ballots (85%) for Pryor and 852 ballots (15%) for Rebekah Kennedy of the Green party.

Other local results on state issues include:

Amendment 1 ~ voter qualifications ~ 4,048 (74%) voted yes and 1,439 (26%) voted no.

Amendment 2 ~ annual legislature ~ 3,557 (67%) voted yes and 1,740 (33%) voted no.

Amendment 3 ~ state lottery ~ 3,225 (57%) voted yes and 2,429 (43%) voted no.

Initiative 1 ~ adoptive parents ~ 3,555 (63%) voted yes and 2,099 (37%) voted no.

Question 1 ~ water bonds ~ 3,525 (66%) voted yes and 1,852 (34%) voted no.

All five of the issues appeared to have passed statewide, according to unofficial results announced Tuesday night.

Barack Obama was declared the winner in the presidential race. Locally votes for president were cast as follows: John McCain, 3,357 (58%); Barack Obama, 2,136 (37%); Ralph Nader, 193 (3%); Chuck Baldwin, 59 (1%); Cynthia McKinney, 34 (.58%); Bob Barr, 30 (.51%); Gloria La Riva, 19 (.33%).
