Hoxie juniors clinch titleNathan Hibbard
The Hoxie junior Mustangs clinched the 3A-3 conference championship with a 28-14 victory over Cave City in a showdown of unbeaten teams Thursday night at Crider Field.
Sebastian Irvin scored on a three-yard run, and Zach Crisler ran in the two-point conversion, and the junior Mustangs held an 8-0 lead after one quarter.
Hoxie extended its lead with a pair of scores in the second period. Irvin added his second touchdown on a six-yard run, and Crisler passed to Tyler Hall for the two-point conversion, giving the Mustangs a 16-0 lead. Later in the period, Crisler tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Mashburn, as Hoxie took a 22-0 lead into halftime.
Cave City attempted a comeback in the second half, connecting on two scoring passes in the third period to trim Hoxie's advantage to 22-14.
That's as close as Cave City would get, however, as the Mustangs' defense stiffened, denying the Cavemen any more points.
Hoxie added a final touchdown on Crisler's three-yard run in the closing seconds to set the final score.
"The offensive line played extremely well. The defense also played well, just as they have all season long. It was just a great team effort," said Hoxie head coach Sean Cockrell."
Irvin finished with 101 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Tim James added 59 yards on 11 carries. Crisler completed 3-of-5 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.
The junior Mustangs will try to wrap up a perfect season Thursday when they host Harrisburg at Crider Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
