Hoxie suffers first loss
The Rivercrest Colts used some big plays to pull off a 27-26 upset win over the Hoxie Mustangs Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie got on the scoreboard first, when Adam Madden returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Brad Cook added the extra point for a 7-0 Mustang lead just 15 seconds into the game.
Rivercrest reached into their bag of tricks and pulled out a "hook and ladder" play to earn the tying score. From the Hoxie 27-yard line, quarterback Josh Fleming completed a pass to T.J. Gordon at the 15-yard line. Gordon then lateraled to Demoine Brown, who raced into the end zone.
Hoxie took a 13-7 lead on a three-yard run by Houston Waldrupe with 4:20 to play in the first quarter.
Rivercrest tied the game on a 45-yard run by Terrence Banks with 7:59 remaining in the second quarter.
The Colts took a 20-13 lead on a 47-yard pass from Fleming to Brown with 1:42 to play in the half.
The game was then scoreless until Hoxie's Clay Hart scored on a four-yard run with 1:06 to play in the third period. Cook's PAT tied the game at 20-20.
Rivercrest took the lead for good on a five-yard run by Jasper Jackson with 8:41 to play in the game. Fleming kicked the PAT for a 27-20 Colt lead.
Waldrupe pulled the Mustangs to within 27-26 with an 10-yard run with 2:57 to play. The PAT attempt was no good, leaving the Colts with a one-point lead.
Hoxie got the ball back late in the period and drove into Rivercrest territory. The Colts' defense stopped the Mustangs a yard short on a fourth-down play with less than a minute to play to preserve the upset and record their first win of the season.
Waldrupe led a balanced Hoxie ground game with 87 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Hart rushed 10 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. Cook carried six times for 55 yards, and Blaine Middlecoff finished with 50 yards on 12 carries.
Hart completed 1-of-11 pass attempts for nine yards. Madden had the Mustangs' only reception.
Cade Crisler led the Mustang defense with 12 tackles, and Josh Cypret had 11. Cook had nine tackles, while Derek Johnson and David Sanders each had eight. Johnson and Cypret each had a quarterback sack.
Hoxie is now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in 3A-3 conference play. The Mustangs travel to Corning this week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
