WR golfers earn regional titleNathan Hibbard
Walnut Ridge High School claimed its third consecutive Class 2A Region 2 golf championship Sept. 23 at Cooper's Hawk Golf Course near Melbourne. The Bobcats shot a team score of 239 to finish three shots ahead of host Melbourne. Salem was third with a score of 251.
"It was very exciting this year, because we were not expected to win the tournament, as we were the previous two years," said Walnut Ridge head coach Derek Bramlett.
Individually, Matt Ryan led Walnut Ridge with a score of 76, which was good for second overall. John-Scott Kelley finished fourth overall with a score of 78, and Wesley Davis carded an 85 for the Bobcats.
Walnut Ridge, Melbourne and Salem all advanced to the 2A State Tournament on Monday at Turkey Mountain in Horseshoe Bend.
"We finished second at the state tournament at El Dorado last year. I don't know if we can equal that feat or nor, but no one expected us to win the regional tournament," Bramlett said.
Other teams, and their scores, competing in the regional tournament were Ridgefield Christian (254), East Poinsett County (259), Izard County Consolidated (261), West Side Greers Ferry (268) and Concord (313).
