Conflict is unfortunateGretchen Hunt
The conflict between the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport and the Walnut Ridge Country Club is making the news in the region once again. As reported in a previous edition of The Times Dispatch, both entities have filed suits regarding the issue of the golf course and one of the airport's runways being too close.
The Country Club has requested an injunction to prevent the Airport Commission from infringing on their lease, while the airport and city of Walnut Ridge have counter filed, requesting the lease be ended and the property be returned to the commission's control.
We have been asked to share our opinion on the issue. Our opinion remains that we wish this conflict could have been avoided.
We could no more pick a side, than a mother could choose a favorite child. We see both entities as being essential to the community and are still hopeful that a solution can be found that will not only allow both to continue, but also to progress.
We will continue to follow the story, because we realize the importance of this case. We also realize, though, that the decision will be made in a court of law and not in the pages of this publication.
A jury trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 10 to decide the issue.
