Many economic stimulus
payments still unclaimed

There are an estimated 483 senior citizens, veterans and other people in Lawrence County who are still eligible to receive an Economic Stimulus Payment but have not requested it, according to County Judge Alex Latham.

The Association of Arkansas Counties recently released a reminder that time is running out to request the payment. Oct. 15 is the deadline to file the appropriate paperwork.

The process is simple and can be done by requesting a 1040A "short form" from the Internal Revenue Service.

Those eligible include people who receive at least $3,000 in earning and/or benefits from Social Security, disability payments from the Veterans Administration and retired railroad workers with pensions.

Individuals with no tax liability or who are not required to file a tax return can expect a $300 one-time payment or $600 for a couple. Those with qualifying children will receive an additional $300 per child.

Help with filling out the paperwork is available at IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers or on the web at www.irs.gov. The local office is located in Jonesboro at 615 South Main. They can be reached at 870-802-0219.

"With energy prices and the cost of living going up daily it's important that we let our senior citizens and disabled veterans know they are eligible for this payment," said County Judge Alex Latham. "It could make a difference in their lives."
