Walnut Ridge aldermen discuss
mosquitoes, fireworks display

The Walnut Ridge City Council had no new business or old business on the agenda at their July 8 meeting, but aldermen discussed the city's Fourth of July fireworks show and mosquito control during their open forum.

Mayor Michelle Rogers told the council that they had a great turnout for the live music and fireworks show last Saturday. She thanked the Walnut Ridge Fire Department and volunteer firemen, as well as the Walnut Ridge Police Department, for the work they put into the event. Even the mosquitoes seemed to cooperate, no one complained of a single bite, Rogers said.

"We have received only positive comments," she added. She asked the council to be sure to thank the sponsors when they have an opportunity.

"I appreciate them so much, especially with the economy like it is these days," Rogers said. "There are towns that did not get to have a fireworks display this year because the economy is so bad they couldn't afford it. Our sponsors helped make our display possible."

Alderwoman Paula Haskins asked when the city is going to begin spraying for mosquitoes. It was noted spraying has not yet begun, but will probably begin soon.

Alderman Michael "Button" Wallin, chair of the mosquito committee, told the council that they will begin when the count in the mosquito traps is high enough to justify spraying.

"The price of the chemicals is so high that we wait until we have to spray. The mosquito population is late this year due to dry weather before the recent rain. The rain seems to have increased their numbers, so we're about to the point that we need to start," Wallin said. "With the mosquitoes late start, we may have to spray for them later into the fall than we did last year."

Council members were given information forms to fill out and return to Haskins, who is working on a website for the city. She asked that they return them as soon as possible.

"I want to get the city's website up and running," she said.
