WR HOSTS FISHING DERBY ~ Matthew Boyd, eight, of Walnut Ridge, and his father, Michael Boyd watch his line for a bite during the annual Walnut Ridge Fishing Derby held Saturday at Stewart Park. Children competed for prizes based on total weight, as well as biggest and smallest catches.

Justices
change
plans for
addition

Lawrence County Quorum Court members unanimously decided to convert the current library building into a courtroom to serve Lawrence County needs when the county begins leasing the building in 2009. The lease will run for 25 years. The front of the library is roughly the same size as the courtroom presently used in the courthouse.

Hoxie named to ACE program

The city of Hoxie has been named an Arkansas Community of Excellence (ACE). The city will host a celebration with a presentation ceremony on Friday, June 20, at 2:30 p.m. at the Hoxie Service Center.

Cell phone technology
added to 911 system

The Lawrence County 911 program is continuing progress to serve the community. The latest improvement to the 911 program, called Phase 2, which pinpoints the location of a wireless caller, is about to be implemented.

WR firefighters train on new truck

The Walnut Ridge Fire Department took their recently acquired ladder truck to the old Wal-Mart parking lot on Highway 67 for training on Monday.
