Local teams wrap up play
Five Lawrence County high school teams suffered first-round defeats in their respective regional tournaments on Saturday to end their seasons.
In the 2A North Regional at Tuckerman, Riverside's Blake Hogan pitched a no-hitter to lead the Rebels past the Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles 11-1.
Hillcrest broke out early with a run in the top of the first inning, before Riverside tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. The Rebels added three runs in the third inning and put the game away with a seven-run fifth.
Michael Spain took the loss on the mound for Hillcrest.
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds fell to 2A-3 district champion Rector 12-2 in five innings. The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Cougars answered with six runs in the third inning. Rector added six more runs in the fifth inning to end the game due to the mercy rule.
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats were one strike away from advancing to the second round, before Marked Tree's John Ed Turpen stroked a two-out, two-strike single in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game 6-6. The Indians' Richie Tate then connected on a two-run double to provide Marked Tree with its winning margin.
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats lost to Bay 7-6.
Host Black Rock was faced with the task of playing defending state champion Southside Bee Branch in the first round. The Hornets limited Black Rock to just three hits en route to defeating the Zebras 12-2 in six innings.
