Hoxie boys' season endsDebbie Richey
The Hoxie Mustangs saw their 2008 baseball season end with a 12-0 loss to Marmaduke in the 3A-3 District Tournament Saturday at Brookland.
Marmaduke's Trent Smith threw a one-hitter against the Mustangs, allowing only a first-inning single by Joseph Richardson.
Hoxie opened the tournament with an exciting 11-10 comeback win over Harrisburg.
The game began on Friday, as the Hornets scored a run in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 lead before the game was halted because of rain.
Play resumed Saturday afternoon and Harrisburg added another run in the third to make it 6-0. Hoxie got on the board in the bottom of the third when Richardson led off the inning with a home run. Cade Crisler and Jake Hitt each walked and scored on a fielding miscue to bring the Mustangs to within 6-3 after three innings.
Harrisburg added a run in the top of the fourth, and Hoxie answered with three in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-6. Blake Snow walked and scored on a single by Garrett Hart. Garrett Burgess walked and scored on a sacrifice by Crisler.
Harrisburg added three more runs to make the score 10-6 going into the last inning.
Crisler led off with a single, and Hitt tripled. Tanner Jarrett and Thomas Kingsland each reached on an error. Brad Harp walked and Snow singled to tie the score. Harp circled the bases and scored the winning run when Harrisburg threw the ball away trying to get Harp at third.
Earlier in the week, the Mustangs fell to the Harrisburg Hornets 4-2 on April 22.
Hoxie hosted the Highland Rebels on April 21 and was defeated by the Rebels 5-2. Blake Snow took the loss on the mound.
