Lawrence County well
represented in Sun classic

Lawrence County was well represented in The Sun Senior Classic on Sunday in Jonesboro High School's Hurricane Gym. Outstanding players from the region were selected to compete in all-star games.

Hoxie's Ray Volner, who was selected to play for the White Team, was the lone male pick from Lawrence County.

In girls action, the county had two players on each team. Hoxie's Megan Black and Jessica Barber played for the White Team, and Walnut Ridge's Rachel Looney and Hillcrest's Jessica Broadway were selected for the Blue Team.

Volner's White Team eked out an 87-85 victory. He gave the team its largest lead, 75-66 with a three-pointer a few minutes into the final quarter of play.

The Blue Team rallied, but the White Team, led by Volner with 14 points, held on for the win.

In the girls game, the Blue Team came out on top 85-73. Broadway and Looney both contributed to the winning team's efforts.

A layup by Black had cut the Blue Team's lead to 75-71, but Broadway quickly answered with a basket at the other end.

Looney was among leading scorers for the Blue Team, recording 13 points and nine rebounds. Black finished with 10 points for the White Team.
