Spring is time for cleanups

Gretchen Hunt

As spring brings warmer temperatures, the season is the perfect opportunity for household repairs, yard work and other maintenance. It is also the perfect time to get rid of unwanted items, and local cleanups are scheduled to help residents do just that.

Walnut Ridge and Hoxie will both have curbside pickup for residents, and the county has dumpsters available for disposal of items, as well.

County dumpsters

Lawrence County will have Class IV dumpsters available through Saturday of this week. The dumpsters are for non-household waste, such as appliances and furniture. No tires, shingles, building materials, etc. will be accepted.

The dumpsters will be located at Bill Jones Wrecker Service at Powhatan and at the Lawrence County Shop on Highway 67, south of Hoxie. They will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Walnut Ridge

The City of Walnut Ridge will conduct its cleanup starting Monday and continuing through April 26. Items should be placed at curbside for pickup.

During these dates, dumpsters will also be available at the city shop, located at 330 Southwest Fourth Street, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

For more information, contact the mayor's office at 886-6638.

The City of Hoxie will begin its annual cleanup Monday, as well.

Pick up will begin on the northwest side of Midway Road and work southwest to the bypass, then cross over to the southeast side and work northwest to the Brewer addition.

Residents are asked to separate items into four categories: metal (appliances, etc.), brush, wood and junk items. Items that cannot be picked up are: tires, batteries, paint cans and chemical cans.

All items must be by the street ready for pickup. No return trips will be made.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to put trash in city dumpsters.

Landfill sets free dump day

In addition, the Northeast Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District will host a free dump day at the landfill in Paragould on April 26 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents of Clay, Greene, Lawrence and Randolph counties are eligible to participate in the free dump day.

James Abbey, executive director of the NEA Regional Solid Waste Management District, said he hopes residents will take advantage of the day, which will be held rain or shine.

"This is being offered to allow our residents an opportunity to do spring cleaning and tidy up their neighborhoods during the next few weekends and then haul it to the landfill and dump it for free," he said.

Those bringing items are reminded that there are no employees available to help with unloading. In addition, only solid waste is allowed. The landfill cannot accept liquids, medical waste or hazardous waste.
