An application for Walnut Ridge to participate in the Arkansas Downtown Network was mailed to Main Street Arkansas on March 18, according to Lorra Whitmire, who is heading up the committee working on the project.
The application required the committee to show support through letters and financial contributions. Whitmire said the response from the community has been outstanding.
"We have raised in excess of $8,000 and have received around 50 letters," she said. "The committee is very excited about the amount of support shown. We expected some, but not near the amount we received."
In addition Whitmire said she has had several people call and volunteer to be part of the project if Walnut Ridge is accepted into the network.
The committee will meet April 3 at 4 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce to plan a presentation that will be presented in Little Rock on April 16.
One way or another, the effort has already been a success, Whitmire said, regarding the level of support shown by the individuals, businesses, industries, schools, churches and civic organizations in the community.
"Even if we don't get approved through the Main Street Arkansas Program, we are committed to continue our efforts," she said.
