LawCo. 4-H Centennial
Celebration is March 15

Gretchen Hunt

As Arkansas celebrates 100 years of 4-H, Lawrence County will host its celebration on March 15 at the Clover Bend School.

Martha May, Lawrence County Extension agent-staff chair, said the reunion and celebration event, which will begin at noon, is for everyone including active, past and hopeful supporters of 4-H.

A free chili lunch will be served, and there will be a brief program including a showing of the Arkansas 4-H Centennial video. In addition, County Judge Alex Latham will speak.

Following the program, the county 4-H broiler BBQ contest will be held.

In addition, there will be a display of 4-H memorabilia. May said they are asking individuals to bring their items directly to Clover Bend, not to the Extension office, and to label each item with their name.

"We're hoping that 4-H alumni will bring their 4-H memorabilia to Clover Bend to share, like record books, trophies, photos, ribbons and completed projects," May said. "We will have tables to display these items."

May, who in addition to being a county agent is also a former 4-H member, said she is looking forward to the celebration.

"I believe the magic of the event will be in fellowshipping and seeing how far 4-H has come," she said.

A special section marking 100 years of 4-H will appear in next week's edition of The TD.

Wagon train to be highlight

Lawrence County 4-H is sponsoring a Centennial Wagon Train as part of the celebration. All 4-H alumni, members, leaders and those interested in wagon trains are invited to participate.

The wagon train will form at Minturn Grain beginning at 9 a.m. and will leave at 10 a.m. headed for Clover Bend and should arrive between noon and 12:30 p.m.

For more information, contact Donna and Jerry Moore at 870-878-0033. Participants who bring horses must provide negative Coggins papers. Horses, wagons and buggies are welcome. No ATV, four-wheelers or bicycles will be allowed.

For more information on 4-H, the wagon train or the Centennial Celebration, call the Lawrence County Extension Service at 886-3741. (Additional reporting for this article was provided by Leslie Ginn.)
