Frankly Speaking

John Bland

It is exciting that three Lawrence County high school girls basketball teams - the Black Rock Lady Zebras, Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats and the Hoxie Lady Mustangs - qualified for state tournaments.

The Lady Mustangs of Hoxie have already played in their state tournament. A loss to Shiloh Christian, Tuesday afternoon at Cave City, ended their season. Black Rock and Walnut Ridge are both scheduled to play tonight at 7. The Lady Zebras will face Nevada County at Harrison, while the Lady Bobcats will play Strong at Jessieville (near Hot Springs).

Most people who grew up or have lived in this area have memories of Fireman's Hall, which was razed last week. Until just the last few months, it served as the site of many public functions, such as the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, CASA Breakfast with Santa and many other events.

Growing up, my first memory of the building, then known as the community center, was attending a Little Miss Walnut Ridge Pageant. The TD plans to publish a feature in the near future about the history of this building. We welcome memories from our readers.

It was a pleasant surprise to recognize a self-portrait of Brent Smith, a WRHS student, while walking through the halls of Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, last Wednesday. His drawing, along with many other framed pieces of artwork by Arkansas students and also by patients of the hospital, lined the halls. His art instructor is Ginger Bibb
