The Hoxie Mustangs' season came to an unexpected end last Wednesday with a first-round loss in the 3A Region 3 Basketball Tournament at Marmaduke. The Mustangs, regular season and district tournament champions of 3A-3, were upset by the Flippin Bobcats, the fourth-place team from 3A-1 East, 48-44.
The teams were tied 13-13 after one quarter and appeared to be heading for a halftime tie when Hoxie's Justin Weitkamp rebounded a Mustang miss and scored on a stick-back to give Hoxie a 28-26 lead at the break.
The Bobcats' defense was the story in the second half. Flippin held Hoxie to just three points in the third quarter and took a 37-31 lead into the final period.
Hoxie opened the fourth quarter with an 11-1 run to grab a 42-38 lead, but a pair of baskets by Flippin tied the game again at 42-42. The Bobcats then took advantage of a Hoxie turnover to score the go-ahead basket. Hoxie still had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds, but couldn't get a shot to fall. Flippin added a pair of free throws to set the final score.
Ray Volner led Hoxie with 15 points, and Beau Sisco added 12.
"I was very proud of the kids and the effort they gave throughout the year," said head coach Darrell Crisler. "We had some very unselfish players who put the team first and that is the reason we had a great year.
"Although we did not reach our last goal, we finished 15-1 in the conference and were conference champs. We finished the year at 24-4 and won the county and district tournaments."
"The Mustang players and coaches would like to thank the administration, the staff, the student body and all the loyal fans for their support throughout the year," added Crisler.
