Lady Zebras are regional champs
The Black Rock Lady Zebras added another trophy to their post-season hardware collection by claiming the championship of the 1A Region 3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Mount Vernon.
Black Rock will now compete in the 1A State Tournament, which will be held at North Arkansas College in Harrison. The Lady Zebras are scheduled to play Nevada County tonight at 7.
Just as in the district tournament, the Lady Zebras had to face the host team in the finals and once again they were up to the challenge, defeating the Mount Vernon-Enola Lady Warhawks 55-39 in the title game.
Mount Vernon-Enola grabbed an 18-15 lead to close the first half. Black Rock overtook the Lady Warhawks in the third period and led 32-28 heading into the final period. Black Rock dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 23-11 to capture the title.
Jordan Fore led the Lady Zebras with 15 points, and Whitney Martin added 12. Brittany Anderson had 10 points. Ashley Stallings notched eight points, and Stephanie Bagwell had six. Bethany Erwin and Teri Aden each finished with two points.
Black Rock used a fourth-quarter surge to overcome a six-point deficit and defeat the Greers Ferry Westside Lady Eagles 39-34 in the regional tournament semifinals on Friday.
The Lady Zebras led 6-5 after the first quarter, but fell behind in the second period and trailed 16-12 at halftime. Greers Ferry continued to the control the game in the second half, leading 28-22 after three quarters.
Martin led the Lady Zebras with 11 points, and Stallings added nine. Anderson and Bagwell chipped in eight points each. Aden added two points, and Fore recorded a free throw.
Black Rock opened the tournament by defeating Bradford 58-49 on Feb. 20.
The Lady Zebras held a slim 12-11 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 27-19 at halftime.
Black Rock continued to pull away from Bradford in the third period and took a 41-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Martin led the Lady Zebras with 22 points, a rebound, an assist and a steal. Fore notched 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Bagwell chipped in nine points and had seven boards, three assists and a steal.
Stallings closed with six points, six rebounds and a steal. Aden recorded four points and seven rebounds, and Tiffany Pentecost added three points. Erwin added two points and had four boards. Anderson had a free throw, two rebounds, an assist and two steals.
