Hoxie girls claim district title
Staff Writer Hoxie's Megan Black and Jessica Barber combined for 47 points as the Lady Mustangs captured the championship of the 3A-3 District Basketball Tournament with a 56-53 victory over the East Poinsett County Lady Warriors Friday night at Corning. Next up for the Lady Mustangs is a trip to the Class 3A Region 3 tournament at Marmaduke. Hoxie is scheduled to face Bergman tonight at 7. In the district title game, the Lady Mustangs moved out to a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hoxie extended their lead to 33-23 at halftime on the strength of a stifling defense. EPC, the regular season conference champs, would not go quietly and surged back in the third period to close to within 43-42 after three quarters. Hoxie withstood the Lady Warriors' charge to capture the win. For Hoxie, Black scored 26 points, and Barber added 21.
The Lady Mustangs earned their spot in the finals with a 72-61 win over Hughes in the semifinals on Thursday behind a 35-point performance from Black. Black scored 22 of her points in the first half, as Hoxie led 19-7 after the first quarter and 40-19 at halftime. Hughes attempted to rally in the third period and cut Hoxie's lead to 53-43 entering the final quarter. The Lady Mustangs held off Hughes in the final quarter to record the win and advance to the title game. Also for Hoxie, Barber and Ashley Glenn each scored 17 points. Barber pulled down 13 rebounds.
