BR girls claim district title
Staff Writer The Black Rock Lady Zebras claimed the championship of the 1A-3 South District Basketball Tournament with a 48-43 win over Weiner's Lady Cardinals Thursday at Weiner. The Lady Zebras advance to the 1A-3 Regional Tournament at Mount Vernon, where they are scheduled to play Bradford tonight at 7.
Black Rock faced the host Lady Cardinals for the championship on Thursday. Black Rock gained an 11-10 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Zebras continued to pound the boards in the second quarter and held a 23-17 halftime lead. Black Rock maintained a 37-29 lead at the end of the third quarter. Weiner attempted to rally in the final minutes, but Black Rock held on for the victory. Jordan Fore led the Lady Zebras with 14 points. Stephanie Bagwell notched 13 points, and Whitney Martin added 11. Brittany Anderson and Ashley Stallings each had five points.
After receiving a first-round bye, the Lady Zebras took on Maynard in the semifinals on Feb. 12. Maynard jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first quarter, but Black Rock got their offense on track in the second quarter and stormed to a 21-12 halftime lead. Black Rock held a 37-27 third-quarter lead and advanced to the finals with a 51-45 win. Three Lady Zebras scored in double figures, led by Martin with 17 points. Anderson had 15 points, and Bethany Erwin added 10. Stallings had four points, and Teri Aden closed with two.
