perfect season with district title
The Black Rock junior high basketball teams competed in the 1A-3 South District Tournament at Jonesboro last week.
Black Rock's junior high boys put the finishing touches on a storybook season by claiming the championship of the 1A-3 South Junior High Basketball Tournament. The Zebras defeated Weiner 55-33 in the title game Saturday night at Jonesboro to finish the season with a perfect 29-0 record.
Black Rock dashed out to a 12-7 lead after one quarter and held a 28-18 lead at halftime. The Zebras continued to pull away in the second half, taking a 41-26 lead into the final quarter.
Hunter Horton recorded a double double in the final game, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tadd Fore had 14 points and four rebounds. Joe Carey notched eight points, eight boards and an assist. Trent Morledge chipped in with six points, three assists and three steals.
Tyler Roby finished with five points, seven rebounds and four steals. Khris Foster added three points and had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Tyler Newell had three points, two rebounds and an assist. Korliss Moore had an assist and a steal, and Cody Clairday had a rebound.
In addition to receiving the tournament trophy, the junior Zebras were presented the trophy for finishing first in the conference during the regular season.
Foster, Carey, Horton, Roby, Fore and Morledge received plaques for earning All-Conference honors.
After receiving a first-round bye, the Black Rock junior boys took on Armorel in the semifinals on Thursday.
Black Rock held a 13-7 first-quarter lead and remained in control in the second quarter, leading 22-12 at the end of the first half.
The Zebras continued to pull away from Armorel in the third period and took a 36-18 lead into the last quarter. Black Rock remained unbeaten with a
Carey led the Zebras with 15 points, five rebounds and a steal. Fore contribtuted 12 points, a rebound three assists and three steals. Morledge recorded 10 points, four assists and three steals. Horton notched seven points and had six boards. Roby chipped in four points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Foster added three points, a rebound and a steal. Clairday closed with two points and a rebound. Newell added a free throw, a rebound and an assist, and Matthew Stewart had two rebounds.
The junior Lady Zebras advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to Armorel 39-21 on Thursday.
Armorel led 9-6 after the first quarter, 18-10 at halftime and 27-17 after three quarters.
Teri Aden led Black Rock with 16 points. Sarah Penn and Sarah Sloan had two points each, and Megan Jones added a free throw.
The Black Rock girls opened the tournament with a 42-34 win over host Ridgefield Christian on Feb. 4.
Aden led the Lady Zebras with 22 points.
