Hoxie claims junior girls titleDebbie Richey
The Hoxie and Hillcrest junior high girls faced off in the finals of the Lawrence County Tournament Saturday at Imboden.
Hoxie slipped out to a 9-4 first-quarter lead. The Lady Screamin' Eagles had difficulty with Hoxie's defense and trailed 19-12 at halftime.
Hillcrest began to gain some momentum in the third quarter and closed the gap to 26-21.
The fourth quarter started off with Hillcrest demonstrating some tough defense and tying the game 27-27 with 3:44 left to play. The Lady Mustangs moved back in front 31-30 with 48.9 on the clock. With Hoxie leading 33-30, Hillcrest's Sarah Saffell was sent to the charity stripe with 3.4 seconds on the clock and sank her first free throw to make the score 33-31. Saffell missed her second attempt. Hillcrest grabbed the offensive rebound, but a shot fell off the rim as the final buzzer sounded.
Amy Galbreath led the Mustangs with 13 points. Leslee Parrish notched seven points, and Neely Ragsdale added four. Karina Mashburn and Katelyn Cook closed with three points each. Cayley Rosson added two points, and Autumn Nelson recorded a free throw.
Samantha Blevins led the Lady Eagles with nine points. Kelsea Sneed closed with seven points, and Kellie Beasley notched five. Morgan Penn added four points, and Chelsey Howard recorded three points. Chelsea Sneed chipped in two points, and Sarah Saffell contributed a free throw.
