Lady Zebras earn win over MaynardDebbie Richey
Black Rock's Lady Zebras edged the Maynard Lady Tigers 56-52 in 1A-3 conference basketball action at Maynard Thursday.
The match was a barnburner from the outset, with the teams tied 27-27 at the halftime break.
Black Rock overwhelmed the Tigers in the third quarter, taking a 43-30 lead with the final quarter ahead. The Lady Zebras were able to withstand Maynard's fourth-quarter rally and claim the victory.
Black Rock had two players score in double figures, with Jordan Fore leading the way with 21 points, two rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ashley Stallings contributed 13 points, five rebounds and a steal.
Stephanie Bagwell had eight points, two rebounds and a steal. Brittany Anderson had eight points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Whitney Martin notched four points, six boards and two steals, and Bethany Erwin closed with two points and a rebound.
The Lady Zebras hosted Ridgefield Christian on Senior Night on Jan. 22.
Black Rock earned a 17-8 first-quarter lead. The Lady Zebras put the game away in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Warriors 25-4 in the period, to take a commanding 42-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Black Rock held a 54-21 third-quarter lead. The final quarter was shortened, with the mercy rule in effect, as the Lady Zebras claimed a 65-25 victory.
Three Lady Zebras scored in double figures, led by Martin with 20 points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals. Stallings contributed 13 points, four boards and four steals. Fore added 12 points, three rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Tiffany Pentecost notched eight points, six boards and an assist. Bagwell chipped in with five points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Anderson closed with four points, three rebounds, three assists and six steals, and Amber Lamb recorded three points, a rebound, two assists and two steals.
The Black Rock junior high girls lost to Ridgefield Christian 27-17.
The junior Lady Warriors held a 9-6 first-quarter lead. Black Rock was unable to score in the second period and fell behind 18-6 at halftime.
Black Rock began to edge their way back into the game in the third quarter, cutting Ridgefield's lead to 21-15 heading into the final quarter. The junior Lady Zebras were unable to complete the comeback and fell to the Lady Warriors.
Megan Jones led Black Rock with nine points. Christian Ervin and Breanna Hillburn contributed four points each.
