Hillcrest, WR split gamesDebbie Richey
Hillcrest and Walnut Ridge squared off in 2A-2 conference basketball action Thursday at Walnut Ridge.
Hillcrest defeated Walnut Ridge 61-53, handing the Lady Bobcats their second loss in conference play.
The Lady Eagles held a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 31-24 at halftime. Hillcrest continued to lead 45-36 after three quarters. Walnut Ridge cut the Hillcrest lead to three points in the final minute, but the Lady Eagles withstood the rally and held on for the win.
Breanna Doyle led Hillcrest with 16 points. Tara Polston scored 13, and Whitney Jones added 11.
Vanessa Oliver and Rachel Looney each had 16 points for Walnut Ridge. Looney also had 10 rebounds, and Oliver had two steals. Chelsea Treadway added 10 points, and Lacy Cobble added five. Jordan Rorex had three points and four steals. Alivia Hackworth had two points, and Chelsey Linebaugh added a free throw.
Walnut Ridge raced out to a 24-10 first-quarter lead, before the Screamin' Eagles came on strong in the second period and closed to within 28-23 at halftime.
Hillcrest overtook the Bobcats in the third quarter and held a 39-38 lead entering the final period. Walnut Ridge outscored the Eagles 27-17 in the fourth quarter to claim a 65-56 conference win.
Mitchell Thompson led Walnut Ridge with 20 points, and Bennett Dudley added 14. Wesley Davis had 10 points, and Robert Rider scored eight points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Derek Medlock totaled eight points and John-Scott Kelley had five.
Hillcrest defeated Walnut Ridge 51-44 in a junior high girls game.
Walnut Ridge held a 15-14 first-quarter lead and managed to stay in front 28-27 at halftime.
Hillcrest found their footing in the third quarter, as they took a 39-28 third-quarter lead and held off the Lady Cats in the fourth period.
Ashley Baker led the junior Lady Cats with 22 points and seven steals. Katie Lewis contributed nine points and five boards. Ashley Roacho added seven points and had six steals, and Daniel Vaughn closed with six points and 10 rebounds.
