Mustangs claim wins over
The Hoxie Mustangs outlasted Marmaduke's Greyhounds 63-62 in senior boys basketball Friday at Marmaduke.
Marmaduke jumped on top early, but the Mustangs' Ray Volner hit a three-pointer to bring Hoxie to within 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. Hoxie continued to fight back and took a 29-25 lead to the locker room at halftime.
The Mustangs held a 46-42 lead at the end of the third quarter. With the game tied, Hoxie's Morgan Puckett drilled a three-pointer in the final seconds to put the Mustangs ahead. Volner iced the game with a free throw, putting Hoxie up by four. The Hounds drilled a last-second three-pointer, but came up one point short.
Volner led Hoxie with 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Nate Ragsdell added 11 points and eight rebounds. Puckett notched 10 points, and Tanner Jarrett had nine.
Hoxie improved to 17-3 overall and 14-1 in 3A-3 conference play.
Marmaduke defeated Hoxie's junior high boys 41-32.
Hoxie hosted the Harrisburg Hornets on Jan. 22.
In the senior boys game, Hoxie raced to an 18-9 first-quarter lead. The Mustangs continued to scorch the Hornets in the second quarter and held a 37-23 halftime lead.
Hoxie put the game away, outscoring the Hornets 20-6 in the third period to take a 57-29 lead into the final quarter, and going on to post a 68-35 conference win.
Volner led Hoxie with 16 points and seven boards. Ragsdell chipped in 15 points, five assists and four steals, and Puckett recorded 13 points.
Hoxie edged Harrisburg 40-36 in junior boys action.
