see change in location
The Lawrence County Library Board of Trustees voted in their regular meeting on Jan. 17 to pursue the relocation of the library in Walnut Ridge to the old Hutcherson Furniture building.
At a previous meeting the board had voted to look into the cost of relocating. Ashley Burris, director, gathered estimates on updating the building and bringing it up to code.
County Judge Alex Latham and Justice of the Peace Junior Briner both attended the January meeting. After discussing renovation costs and lease details, the board voted to move farther with the project.
A legal agreement will have to be signed and approved by both the library board and the Quorum Court. As of now, a tentative agreement has been made in anticipation of the legal agreement being accepted by both parties.
Libii Fairhead, an interior designer for Brackett Krennerich, was also at the meeting to present a plan to the board.
"The biggest issue ~ and expense," said Burris, "is bringing the bathrooms up to code. Other renovations will include new carpeting, knocking down some walls, paint, etc., but the ball is rolling."
Burris added that she would like to be relocated before the summer reading program starts, but there are still a lot of hurdles.
"A contract has yet to be approved by the library board and quorum court," she said, "and we're still in design phases with the architect. I'm really excited about getting more space and have been very impressed with the business minds of my board."
