Lady Eagles beat WCCDebbie Richey
The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles earned a 55-39 win over the White County Central Lady Bears in 2A-2 conference basketball action Friday at Lynn.
Hillcrest began dropping baskets early, taking a 23-6 first-quarter lead and continued to hold a 35-16 halftime lead.
WCC tried to find their footing in the third quarter, but were overtaken by Hillcrest and trailed the Lady Eagles 44-29 after three quarters.
Jessica Broadway led Hillcrest with 10 points. Breanna Doyle contributed nine points, and Whitney Jones added eight points. Amber Glenn notched seven points, Lauren Pickle recorded six points and Terra Polston closed with five points. Natalie Johnson and Tamara Evans chipped in four points each, and Shelby Huskey recorded two points.
Hillcrest hosted the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs on Jan. 8 at Lynn.
In the senior girls game, the Lady Bulldogs slipped out to a 14-11 first-quarter lead. Hillcrest failed to get the momentum needed and trailed 24-21 at halftime.
The Lady Screamin' Eagles hit the hardwood after break, looking like a different team. They turned up the defensive pressure, forcing Tuckerman into turnovers. Breanna Doyle hit a mid-court three-pointer at the buzzer, giving the Lady Eagles a 39-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Hillcrest continued to haunt the Lady Bulldogs in the final quarter. Natalie Johnson drained a three-pointer, followed by another three-pointer from Doyle. The Lady Eagles iced the game with six free throws, as they claimed a 56-50 win over Tuckerman.
Doyle led the Lady Eagles with a double double, with 20 points and 10 boards. Broadway added nine points, and Glenn contributed eight. Johnson tossed in seven points, and Pickle added five. Jones added five points and six assists, and Evans closed with two points.
In junior high girls action, the Lady Screamin' Eagles took a 5-4 first-quarter lead. The game remained close, as Hillcrest took a 12-10 lead to the dressing room.
The junior Lady Eagles' defense proved too strong for the Lady Bulldogs, as Hillcrest increased their lead to 23-13 and went on to record a 26-19 conference victory over Tuckerman.
Samantha Blevins and Morgan Penn led Hillcrest with seven points each, and Chelsea Sneed followed with five points. Chelsey Howard added four points, and Kelsea Sneed closed with three points.
The senior Lady Eagles went on the road and walloped Quitman 64-40 on Jan. 4.
The contest was close early, with Hillcrest holding a 15-13 lead after one quarter. The Lady Eagles began to pull away in the second quarter and led 32-17 at halftime. Hillcrest's domination continued in the second half, and the Lady Eagles led 54-29 at the end of the third period.
Broadway led the Eagles with 15 points, and Doyle added 12. Glenn contributed eight points, and Jones followed with seven. Johnson and Evans totaled six points each for the night, and Kalie Durham closed with four points. Pickle, Stevie Howard and Allie Harris each chipped in two points.
