Hillcrest girls earn comeback
victory against Cave City

The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles started the new year off by hosting the Cave City Cavewomen in high school basketball action at Strawberry on Jan. 3.

Senior B

Cave City stormed to an 8-0 first-quarter lead. Hillcrest continued to struggle in the second period and trailed 18-5 closing the first half.

The Lady Eagles rallied to close the gap to 24-20 after three quarters. Hillcrest turned on their stout defense, holding Cave City to one point in the final quarter. Lady Eagle Natalie Johnson tied the game 25-25 with 4.5 seconds left in regulation to send the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Johnson notched a three-pointer, and Lauren Pickle hit a short jumper to put Hillcrest ahead 30-28. Terra Polston drained a three-pointer in the final seconds to seal the 33-28 win.

Johnson led Hillcrest with 10 points. Shelby Huskey and Pickle notched seven points each. Terra Polston added six points, and Tamara Evans closed with three points.

Junior high

Cave City eased past the junior Lady Eagles 7-3 after the first quarter. Hillcrest answered in the second quarter, tying the match 11-11 at halftime.

The third quarter was a repeat, with the game tied 19-19 heading into the final quarter. The junior Lady Eagles were unable to overcome Cave City, falling 29-21.

Samantha Blevins and Mackenzie Nunnally led the Eagles with six points each. Kelsea Sneed contributed five points. Morgan Penn and Sarah Saffell closed with two points each.

Seventh grade

Hillcrest took a 7-0 first-quarter lead and led 7-2 at halftime.

Hillcrest took a 10-5 third-quarter lead and went on to win by a score of 21-11.

Hillcrest was lead by Lindsey Crews with 10 points. Ashley Mansfield had six points, and Shea Durham added five.
