Family, friends say farewell to soldiers

FLAGS FLY
Flags held by Jeb and Allison Bridges, children of Daniel and Deedee Bridges of Clover Bend and students at Walnut Ridge School, wave in the wind on Monday morning. They have a cousin, Rachel Bryant, who is part of the unit headquartered in Beebe. She will also be traveling with the 39th to Iraq.

GUARD DEPARTS ~ Ruth Ann Lawson (from left) and son, Jacob, of Walnut Ridge were at Robert Army on Monday to say goodbye to her brother, Terry Green of Jonesboro, who left Jan. 8 with members of the local Arkansas National Guard unit. The unit is part of the 39th Infantry Brigade, which is now in Camp Shelby, Miss., where they will remain for several weeks before their deployment to Iraq.

FAMILY GOODBYE ~ John Stowers (center) of Hoxie left Jan. 8 with the local Arkansas National Guard unit for Camp Shelby, Miss., from where they will deploy in a few weeks to Iraq. GUARD UNIT PREPARES FOR DUTY IN IRAQ ~ Machelle Smith (second, from right) gathered with family and friends before her departure on Jan. 8 from Walnut Ridge with the Arkansas National Guard. After a few weeks of final preparations at Camp Shelby, Miss., the 39th Infantry Brigade will leave for deployment in Iraq. With Smith are her mother, Barbara Smith of Pocahontas; her daughters, Emily and Cheyenne Smith, who attend Hoxie School, and Brandon Johnson and Tim Porter, both of Little Rock.
