NEA Tourney begins FridayThe annual NEA Invitational High School Basketball Tournament will get underway Friday at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro. All five Lawrence County schools will be represented in senior high boys and girls competition.
County foes Hillcrest and Walnut Ridge will square off in the preliminary round on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Hillcrest is seeded 16th and the Bobcats are the 17th seed. The winner of this game will take on Riverside on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Black Rock Zebras are the 15th seed in the bracket and will face 18th seeded Maynard on Friday at 4:30 p.m. If the Zebras win, they will play Izard County Consolidated on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds received the 11th seed and received a preliminary round bye. The Greyhounds' first game will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against sixth-seeded Buffalo Island Central.
The Hoxie Mustangs are the number two seed in the boys 3A bracket. The Mustangs received a bye through the preliminary round and will open play next Wednesday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Friday's East Poinsett County Ñ Harrisburg game.
Three of LawCo's girls teams received byes in the preliminary round of the 1A & 2A bracket.
The fourth-seeded Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats will face Armorel in the first round on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles are the sixth seed and will face Weiner Saturday morning at 10:30.
The Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds are the seventh seed and will face Izard County Consolidated on Friday at 9 p.m.
The 15th-seeded Black Rock Lady Zebras will face 18th seeded Ridgefield Christian in the preliminary round on Friday at 1:30 p.m. If the Lady Zebras win, they will play Cedar Ridge on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The 3A girls bracket will have a strong 3A-3 conference flavor, with six of the eight teams from that conference, including Hoxie's Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs are the fifth seed and will play fourth-seed Marmaduke in the first round on Saturday at 6 p.m. A win would send the Lady Mustangs to the semifinals against either East Poinsett County or Harrisburg next Thursday.
