S-H, Hillcrest face off in hoops action
Hillcrest hosted Sloan-Hendrix in 2A-2 conference play on Dec. 4 at Lynn.
The senior girls lit up the gym in a barnburner.
Hillcrest took a 9-7 first-quarter lead and increased their lead to 11 points at halftime, 28-17.
With 5:40 to play in the third quarter, Sloan-Hendrix began smoking and narrowed the Hillcrest lead to 28-24 and had closed to within 36-33 at the end of the third quarter.
With 7:06 remaining in the game, Hillcrest held a one-point lead at 36-35.
The Lady Hounds tied the game at 41-41 with 2:16 left. The play went back and forth like a tennis match. Lady Hound Amanda Green tied the game 43-43 at the free throw line, and then put the Hounds ahead 45-43.
A Greyhound foul sent Hillcrest's Breanna Doyle to the line with 12.7 seconds to play, where she tied the game 45-45. A Hillcrest foul then sent Sloan-Hendrix's Hannah Rowsey to the charity stripe with three seconds left on the clock. Rowsey sank two free throws to give the Lady Greyhounds a 47-45 victory.
For Sloan-Hendrix, Megan Break had 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals and an assist. Green had 11 points, seven rebounds, a steal and an assist. Rowsey totaled 11 points, three rebounds and a steal. Katelyn Morris added eight points, four rebounds, a steal and an assist. Kristin Belcher closed with three points, three rebounds, a steal and an assist. Kara Morris had a free throw, four rebounds and an assist and three steals, and Christie Caldwell had a rebound.
Hillcrest was lead by Doyle with 13 points, and Jessica Broadway added 12. Amber Glenn contributed nine, and Whitney Jones added eight. Natalie Johnson tossed in two points, and Lauren Pickle closed with a free throw.
In senior boys action, Hillcrest took a 16-14 lead at the close of the first quarter. Sloan-Hendrix gained momentum in the second quarter and took a 29-25 halftime lead.
The Greyhounds continued to put out the effort and held a 47-40 lead after three quarters. Despite Hillcrest's attempts, they could not muster a rally, as Sloan-Hendrix claimed a 65-53 win.
Royce Pace led the Hounds with 20 points, and Chad Orrick followed with 15. Stanley Archer and Trevor Anderson had 11 points each. John Thomison netted four points, and Austin Morgan added two.
For Hillcrest, Jordan Hunter led the way, with four three-pointers and a total of 17 points. Aaron Britton followed with 13 points. Derek Wooten netted 11 points, and Dustin Durham contributed six. Chris Blevins and Ricardo Rodriquez closed with four points each, and Jacob Clifton had two points.
The junior Lady Screamin' Eagles led 9-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Sloan-Hendrix fought their way back and trailed by only one-point at halftime, 13-12.
Sloan-Hendrix missed their rhythm, as they failed to score in the third quarter and Hillcrest surged to a 27-12 lead. The Lady Hounds stepped up their game in the fourth quarter, but were too late, as Hillcrest took the win 31-20.
Chelsea Sneed led the junior Lady Eagles with 11 points. Kelsea Sneed followed with nine points, and Samantha Blevins contributed seven. Mackenzie Nunnally and Morgan Penn closed with two points each.
Sloan-Hendrix was led by Gennifer Simpson with 10 points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist. Haley Slusser contributed six points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists. Maegan Austin had two points and two rebounds, and Madicyn Huddleston had two points, two rebounds and a steal. Kayla Griffin had seven rebounds. Sara Childress had four rebounds, and Demi Stephens pulled down one rebound.
