Hoxie earns win at EPC

Hoxie traveled to Lepanto to take on the East Poinsett County Warriors in boys high school basketball action on Friday.

In the senior boys game, Hoxie slipped out to a 16-9 lead at the close of the first quarter. Hoxie continued hammering the boards and took a 38-18 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Mustangs continued their stampede over EPC, leading 53-27 heading into the final quarter and taking the win by a score of 69-40.

Hoxie improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Ray Volner and Tanner Jarrett each recorded double-doubles, with Volner scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, and Jarrett adding 13 points and pulling down 10 boards. Morgan Puckett had seven points, and Tyler Thompson pulled down seven rebounds. Beau Sisco notched six points, and Nathan Ragsdell had six steals.

The junior high game was neck-and-neck until EPC outscored Hoxie 15-0 in the third quarter. EPC hit eight three-pointers in downing the junior Mustangs 53-23.

Zach Crisler led the Mustangs with 13 points, and Brad Harp added five.


The junior Mustangs traveled to Tuckerman on Thursday and dropped a close match to the junior Bulldogs 57-54.

Tuckerman grabbed a 19-13 first-quarter lead over Hoxie. Despite the junior Mustangs' effort, they trailed 32-28 at halftime.

The battle continued, with Tuckerman holding a 41-38 lead going into the final quarter.

Devin Roberts led Hoxie with 12 points and eight boards. Crisler added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals. Harp contributed nine points on three three-pointers, and Brody VanWinkle notched seven points.


The Hoxie boys basketball teams traveled to Piggott on Dec. 4.

The senior Mustangs stampeded to a 25-11 first-quarter lead and increased their lead to 44-24 at the end of the first half.

The Mustangs opened the third quarter with a 20-6 run to extend the lead to 64-30 and led 75-35 heading into the final quarter. With the mercy rule in effect, Hoxie coasted to a 93-37 road victory over the Mohawks.

Three Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Volner with 14 points, and six rebounds. Sisco chipped in 13 points, and Puckett added 10. Jake Hitt, Thompson, Cade Crisler and Justin Weitkamp all contributed eight points each. Kevin Johnson notched seven points and had seven rebounds. Blaine Middlecoff pulled down seven boards, and Ragsdell added six points.

In the junior boys game, Hoxie took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter. The Mohawks stepped up their game in the second period and cut the Mustangs lead to 16-15 at halftime.

Hoxie continued to fight off the Mohawks in the third quarter and led 29-23 entering the final period. However, the junior Mustangs faltered at the charity stripe and Piggott eased into a lead in the final quarter and came away with a 40-35 win.

Roberts and Michael King led Hoxie with nine points each. Crisler followed with eight points, and Sebastian Irvin had five.
