WBC girls action offers excitement

Play continued in the girls bracket of the Williams Baptist College High School Basketball Tournament last week.

Thursday, Nov. 29
Hillcrest - Tuckerman girls

The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles opened their tournament play with a second-round match-up against the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Eagles breezed to a 23-8 lead after the first quarter. Hillcrest continued to play strong defense in the second quarter, forcing turnovers, which they turned into baskets, for a 31-12 lead at halftime.

The Lady Eagles continued their relentless defense in the second half, leading 41-21, at the close of the third quarter and coasting to a 45-33 win.

Breanna Doyle led the Lady Ealges with 18 points. Jessica Broadway had 13 points, and Natalie Johnson contributed seven. Amber Glenn recorded five points, and Lauren Pickle closed with two.

Southside — Viola girls

The Southside Lady Southerners advanced to the semifinals with a 57-46 win over the Lady Longhorns of Viola.

Tuesday, Nov. 27
Pocahontas - Corning girls

Pocahontas’ Lady Redskins advanced to the semifinals with a 50-37 win over Corning.

Monday, Nov. 26
WR - Hoxie girls

Crosstown rivals Walnut Ridge and Hoxie squared off in a second-round contest on Nov. 26. Everyone got their moneys worth, as the game went into overtime before the Lady Bobcats advanced with a 55-48 win.

Walnut Ridge hit the court, drilling baskets early to take a 14-7 first-quarter lead. Hoxie outscored the Lady Bobcats in the second quarter 13-11, but still trailed 25-20 at halftime.

The Lady Bobcats continued to dominate the hardwood in the third quarter, leading 38-30 after three periods.

The final quarter of play was full of excitement. Hoxie began to apply pressure, which resulted in turnovers and Mustang points. Hoxie closed the gap to 42-41 with 3:49 left to play. As the game came to a close, it became a free throw battle, and Hoxie took a 45-44 lead with 1:40 on the clock.

Walnut Ridge made their way to the free throw line with 1:27 left to play and tied the game 45-45. Neither team scored during the remainder of regulation play, and the game headed into overtime.

The Lady Bobcats took an 49-48 lead with 1:11 left in overtime, with Hoxie missing at the charity stripe. Walnut Ridge took the hard-fought win and advanced to the semifinals.

Walnut Ridge had three players in double figures, with Chelsea Treadway leading the way with 17 points. Alivia Hackworth followed with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Rachel Looney had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Vanessa Oliver and Chelsey Linebaugh each added five points. Jordan Rorex had 11 rebounds.

Megan Black led the Lady Mustangs with 18 points. Jessica Barber and Ashley Glenn each had eight points, and Raven Gates added six. Brooke French added six points, and Tanya Sisco closed with two.
