WBC boys action recounted
Play continued in the Williams Baptist College High School Basketball Tournament last week.
Hoxie defeated conference rival Corning 54-49 in an exciting second-round game that wasn't decided until the final minute.
After being tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, Hoxie took a 22-19 lead with 4:24 to play before halftime. The Bobcats tied the game 22-22 with 2:51 left in the half and held a 29-26 lead at the end of the quarter.
The teams continued to trade baskets in the second half. Hoxie trailed by two, 35-33, with 2:11 left in the third period and 38-34 heading into the final quarter.
Corning led 40-39 with 6:23 on the clock, but Hoxie stepped it up and took a 41-40 lead with 6:02 to play. After Corning regained the lead, but the Mustangs' pressure was too much for the Cats and Hoxie tied the game again at 47-47 with 2:02 showing on the clock.
Corning then fouled, sending Hoxie's Morgan Puckett to the free-throw line. Puckett sank both free throws to give the Mustangs a 49-47 lead with 55.7 seconds to play. Subsequent fouls by the Bobcats sent Hoxie's Nate Ragsdell and Puckett to the charity stripe, where they converted their free throws to ice the game and send the Mustangs on to the semis.
Puckett led the Mustangs with 14 points, and Nate Ragsdell followed with 12. Ray Volner contributed 10 points, and Cade Crisler chipped in six. Beau Sisco and Tanner Jarrett had four points each. Justin Weitkamp and Kevin Johnson each added two points.
Pocahontas defeated Viola 54-39 in second round action on Nov. 27.
Riverside - Tuckerman boys
Riverside advanced to the semifinals with a 55-53 win over Tuckerman in the second round.
The Black Rock Zebras took on the Southerners of Southside in first-round action on Nov. 26.
The game was tied 11-11 at the close of the first quarter, before the Southerners edged into a 26-23 lead at halftime.
Southside's pace increased in the second half and they increased their lead to 45-33 heading into the final quarter. Southside ran away in the fourth quarter, defeating the Zebras 61-41.
Chris Richardson led Black Rock with 14 points. Ben Walker notched 11 points,and Les Foster had eight. Jay Nunally topped out with four points, and Garrott Maronde added two. Cager Ridge and Adam Whitmire each added a free throw.
The Tuckerman and Hillcrest boys faced off in the final first-round game of the boys bracket on Nov. 26.
Tuckerman led 17-8 after the first quarter, but Hillcrest gained momentum in the second period and outscored the Bulldogs 20-16 to cut Tuckerman's lead to 33-28 at halftime.
Tuckerman began to pull away in the second half, leading 52-43 heading into the final quarter on their way to a 72-61 win.
The victory was the 999th career win for Tuckerman head coach Morgan Gilbert.
Aaron Britton led the Eagles with 22 points. Derek Wooten followed with 15 points, and Dustin Durham added 14 points. Jordan Hunter contributed four points. Chris Blevins, Ricarado Rodriquez and Jacob Clifton all had two points each.
