Mustangs fall in WBC semifinals
The Pocahontas Redskins, the number-one seed in the boys bracket, used a fourth-quarter surge to edge the fourth-seeded Hoxie Mustangs 52-48 in the semifinals of the 48th Annual Williams Baptist College High School Basketball Tournament on Friday. The game was tied until 4:55 in the first quarter when Hoxie took a 6-4 lead and continued to lead 11-9 at the end of the quarter. The game was tied 11-11 with 6:36 on the clock before Hoxie took the lead of 18-16 with 3:14 left to play. The Mustangs' defense continued to dominate and they held a 25-21 lead heading to halftime.
Hoxie increased their lead to 35-24 with 4:21 left in the quarter and continued to hold a 42-33 advantage heading into the last quarter.
Hoxie led the Skins 44-40 with 6:04 to play, but Pocahontas took a one-point lead at 45-44 with 5:29 to play. The Redskins fouled, sending Hoxie's Cade Crisler to the line. Crisler made a pair of free throws to put the Mustangs back in the lead, 46-45 with 5:26 to play.
The Redskins' Jake Redwine made his way to the line, sinking his shots to give Pocahontas a 50-48 lead with 1:49 left to play. Another Redskin foul shot made the score 51-48 with 24.4 seconds to play. Redwine went back to the line and sealed the game with a final free throw with 5.2 seconds on the clock.
Ray Volner led the Mustangs with 15 points. Cade Crisler contributed 10 points. Nate Ragsdell and Tanner Jarrett each had eight points. Beau Sisco tossed in five points, and Justin Weitkamp closed with two points.
The Riverside Rebels defeated Southside 53-41 in the other boys semifinal.
Number-one seeded Pocahontas defeated second-seeded and two-time defending champion Riverside 52-47 in the finals of the boys bracket.
