Hoxie advances in tourney;
WR, S-H boys drop games

Saturday afternoon featured three games on the boys side of the bracket in the 48th annual Williams Baptist College High School Basketball Tournament.

WR ~ Viola boys

Walnut Ridge took a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Longhorns held the Bobcats to two points in the second quarter and moved out to a 24-11 halftime lead.

Walnut Ridge was unable to tame the Longhorns in the third quarter, as they trailed 33-22. Viola ran away with this match in the final quarter of play, taking a 45-28 victory.

Logan Gaither and Tommy Lawrence led the Bobcats with six points each. Frank Todd, Mitchell Thompson and Derek Medlock each had five points, and Bennett Dudley added two points.

S-H ~ Corning boys

The Corning Bobcats jumped out to a 13-7 lead over Sloan-Hendrix at the end of the first quarter, but the Greyhounds rallied in the second period to tie the game at halftime 23-23.

The Bobcats hammered the boards in the second half and ran out to a 40-29 lead after three periods en route to posting a 61-43 win.

Royce Pace led the Hounds with 11 points, and Stanley Archer added eight. Trevor Anderson and John Thomison each had seven points. Colton Simpson and Jeremy Roberts notched three points each. Zach Ogden and Chad Orrick both had two points.

Hoxie ~ Maynard boys

The Hoxie Mustangs faced the Maynard Tigers in the final game of the evening.

The Mustangs took control early, taking a 26-16 first-quarter lead, and continued to lead 48-35 over the Tigers at halftime.

The Mustangs increased their lead to 58-45 heading into the final quarter. The mercy rule went into effect with 3:28 to play, as Hoxie recorded an 81-52 win.

Morgan Puckett led Hoxie with 22 points, including six three-pointers. Ray Volner followed with 16 points, and Nate Ragsdall added 14. Tanner Jarrett contributed seven points. Jonathan Quesada and Kevin Johnson both recorded six points. Cade Crisler notched five points, and Beau Sisco added a free throw.

Hoxie will face Corning on Thursday evening at 8:30.

First-round action was scheduled to conclude Monday evening with Black Rock taking on Southside, and Hillcrest facing Tuckerman.
