Mustangs defeat Gurdon to advance
It was déjà vu all over again for the Hoxie Mustangs on Friday night at Gurdon, as the Mustangs defeated the Go-Devils 27-14 in the second round of the Class 3A state football playoffs. Hoxie won at Gurdon 19-6 in the first round last year.
Hoxie will take to the road for its third-round game against the 11-1 Glen Rose Beavers. Glen Rose, located at Malvern, walloped Cedarville 63-22 in the first round, and last week defeated previously unbeaten Marshall 28-0.
Against Gurdon, Hoxie quarterback Houston Hancock connected with Adam Madden on an 81-yard touchdown pass for the Mustangs' first score. Brad Cook added the extra point for a 7-0 Mustang lead. Hancock later scored on a quarterback sneak from a yard out. Cook's PAT put Hoxie ahead 14-0 heading into the second period.
Gurdon scored a touchdown to cut Hoxie's lead to 14-6. Hoxie answered Gurdon's score with a 76-yard touchdown run by Hancock. Cook's PAT gave the Mustangs a 21-6 lead at halftime.
Gurdon came out strong in the third period, scoring a touchdown and adding a two-point conversion to cut Hoxie's lead to 21-14.
That's as close as Gurdon would get, as Hoxie's defense stiffened and held the Go-Devils scoreless for the remainder of the game. Tyler Thompson added Hoxie's final points on a three-yard run with 6:21 to play.
Hoxie finished with 422 yards of total offense, including 307 yards rushing.
