Hillcrest sweeps Midland

Hillcrest hosted Midland in high school basketball on Friday at Strawberry.

Midland led 12-10 at the close of the first quarter and increased their lead to 26-18 over the Eagles at halftime.

Hillcrest began to step up their defense in the third quarter, but was unable to halt the Mustangs and trailed 36-32 heading in to the fourth quarter. Hillcrest closed the gap to two points in the final stanza, but could not overtake the Mustangs, falling 55-46.

Jordan Hunter led the Eagles with 14 points. Dustin Durham and Derek Wooten closed with nine points each. Chris Blevins and Patrick Corder added five points each, and Aaron Britton recorded four points.

In the junior high game, Hillcrest took an 11-3 first-quarter lead over the junior Mustangs. Midland stepped up their game in the second period and trailed by one point at halftime, 15-14.

The junior Screamin' Eagles gained strength in the third quarter and increased their lead to 26-18 and went on to record a 40-25 win.

Trevor Morgan led the Eagles with 16 points, and Dylan Wooten followed with 14. Tyler Parker added six points, and Billy Brannon had four.

Weiner

The Hillcrest senior high boys hosted Weiner on Nov. 6 at Lynn.

Weiner took a 13-9 lead to close the first quarter. Hillcrest got things rolling in the second period and tied the game 26-26 at halftime.

The Cardinals took a one-point advantage at the end of the third quarter at 40-39. Despite the Eagles' attempts, they were unable to detour the Cardinals, falling 55-52.

Britton was in double digits, as he led Hillcrest with 27 points, 18 boards, two steals and a block. Derek Wooten closed with 12 points, five rebounds and an assist. Durham topped out with four points, a rebound, three assists and a steal.

Blevins had four points, an assist, a steal and a block. Corder contributed three points, four rebounds and a steal, and Jacob Clifton had two points. Hunter had a rebound, two assists and two steals, and Ricarado Rodriquez had an assist.

Tuckerman

The Hillcrest junior high boys traveled to Tuckerman on Nov. 5 and won a 58-55 barn burner over the junior Bulldogs.

The junior Screamin' Eagles took a 13-12 lead over Tuckerman to close the first quarter. The match continued to be neck-and-neck, with Hillcrest taking a 25-22 lead to the lockerroom at halftime.

The Eagles continued to hold on to a 37-35 lead over the Jr. Bulldogs entering the final quarter and held on for the hard-fought victory.

Dylan Wooten led Hillcrest with 29 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and a block. Morgan added 11 points, eight boards, two assists and a steal. Brannon closed with eight points, four rebounds and a block.

Parker contributed six points. Zach Doyle notched three points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal. Zach Bilbrey recorded a free throw, and Hunter Nunnally grabbed two rebounds.
