Mustangs advance in state

The Hoxie Mustangs routed the England Lions 37-7 Friday in the first round of the Class AAA state football playoffs at Crider Field.
Hoxie's Houston Hancock tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Adam Madden with 4:22 to play in the first quarter. Brad Cook's extra-point kick was good, giving the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
With five seconds left in the first half, Mustang David Sanders kicked a 35-yard field goal, increasing Hoxie's lead 10-0 at halftime.
Tyler Thompson scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter. Cook's kick was successful, as Hoxie increased their lead to 17-0. Hancock threw a six-yard pass to Cody West with 3:56 left to play in the third quarter. Cook's kick made the score 24-0.
With the fourth quarter underway, Houston Waldrupe scored on a two-yard run. Cook's kick increased Hoxie's lead to 31-0 with 7:52 to play. Cade Crisler intercepted an England pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown, making the score 37-0.
England closed with a one-yard touchdown and added the PAT for the game's final points. Hoxie finished with 231 yards of total offense, while allowing the Lions just 14 yards rushing. Hancock completed four-of-nine passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns.
Thompson rushed for 50 yards on 10 attempts. Alex Ward had 50 yards on 15 tries. Cook recorded 34 yards on six carries, and Waldrupe had 19 yards on seven carries. Blaine Middlecoff notched 16 yards on two carries, and Hancock closed with eight yards on two carries.
The win sends the Mustangs on to the second round, where they will meet a familiar foe in the Gurdon Go-Devils. Hoxie defeated Gurdon 19-6 in the first round of last year's playoffs. Gurdon won the 3A-7 conference with a 7-0 league record and are 9-1 overall.
