WRHS Principal Charles Lee recognizes senior Rachel Looney for being a state finalist in the Wendy's High School Heisman Award Program.
Looney honored as one of state's
20 Heisman finalists
Twenty of Arkansas' top scholar-athletes have received recognition as state finalists and winners in the 2007 Wendy's High School Heisman Award program. One of the 20 is Rachel Looney, a Walnut Ridge High School senior.
Looney is the daughter David and Karen Looney of Walnut Ridge.
"Rachel is an excellent student, she scored high on her ACT and she's an excellent athlete for us," said Charles Lee, WRHS principal.
Looney is an All-Conference selection in both volleyball and basketball, and as a junior she was named All-State in basketball.
She is on the executive board of the Student Council and president of Bobcats Against Drugs. She is also a member of Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honor Society.
Her honors include being a Girls State delegate, a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership delegate, a Ralph Joseph Youth Leadership representative, a member of the "A" honor roll and a Mack Davis (Math) Award winner.
She has also made two trips with youth of the Hoxie Church of Christ to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. One trip was to Mississippi, and the other was to New Orleans.
The Wendy's High School Heisman Award is now in its 14th year of recognizing students for their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community service. More than 32,000 seniors applied nationwide. From that group, 9,000 school winners were selected and finalists were then chosen in each state.
From the list of 20 finalists, Allison Campbell of De Soto School in West Helena and Samuel Dunn of Lake Hamilton High School in Hot Springs were named state winners.
The two state winners will compete with winners from other states for a chance to be named one of 12 national finalists. One male and one female will be named national winners and presented with a Wendy's High School Heisman trophy during a ceremony televised on ESPN2 Dec 9.
