Screamin' Eagles come
up short against Concord

The Hillcrest boys traveled to Concord Friday night to take on the Pirates in high school basketball action.

The game was tied 12-12 heading into the second quarter. The Pirates outscored the Screamin' Eagles in the second period to take a 30-24 halftime lead.

Hillcrest was unable to catch the Pirates and trailed 52-40 with the final quarter approaching. The Eagles began to hammer the boards and turned up the defense, but were unable to overcome Concord, falling 70-65.

Aaron Britton led the Eagles with 23 points, seven rebounds and a steal. Jordan Hunter added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Dustin Durham contributed 13 points and an assist.

Derek Wooten notched 11 points and had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Chris Blevins closed with three points and six rebounds, and Jacob Clifton recorded a free throw, an assist and five boards.

Melbourne

The Hillcrest senior boys traveled to Melbourne to take on the Bearkats on Oct. 23.

Melbourne eased out of the first quarter leading 18-17 over the Eagles. Hillcrest stepped up and took a one-point halftime lead at 30-29.

The Bearkats regained the lead by one point, 44-43, over the Screamin' Eagles at the close of the third quarter. Hillcrest was unable to hold off Melbourne, falling 63-55.

Hunter led Hillcrest with 13 points and two assists. Britton contributed 12 points, four boards, two assists and a steal. Durham added nine points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Derek Wooten notched eight points, three rebounds, a steal and an assist. Blevins recorded five points and a rebound. Clifton closed with four points and four steals. Patrick Corder had two points and a block, and Robert Jones had two points and two rebounds.

In junior high boys action, the game was tied 10-10 heading into the second quarter, before Melbourne took a 25-24 halftime lead to the dressing room.

Hillcrest came out strong in the second half and gained a 43-34 lead at the end of the third quarter. The battle continued until the buzzer, with the junior Screamin' Eagles holding on for a 51-48 victory.

Dylan Wooten led the junior Eagles with 28 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a steal. Trevor Morgan contributed 13 points, five boards and two assists. Tyler Parker added four points and six rebounds. Billy Brannon had four points, two rebounds, an assist and a block. Zach Bilbrey notched two points and two steals, and Zach Doyle recorded two steals, an assist and a rebound.

Newark

Hillcrest traveled to Newark to take on the Cedar Ridge Timberwolves in senior B, junior B and seventh grade boys basketball action.

Cedar Ridge won the senior B game 57-31.

Ricardo Rodriquez led Hillcrest with 10 points, and Jones added six.

Cedar Ridge won the junior high B game 44-7. Austin Harris scored all seven of Hillcrest's points.

Hillcrest claimed its only victory of the night with a 22-17 win in the seventh grade boys game.

Hunter Nunnally led Hillcrest with eight points, and Doyle added seven.
