Hillcrest girls sweep S-HDebbie Richey
Hillcrest hosted Sloan-Hendrix for an evening of girls high school basketball on Oct. 22 at Strawberry.
Sloan-Hendrix took a 4-2 lead closing the first quarter of play. The Lady Hounds continued to lead 10-7 going into halftime.
The match continued to be close, as Sloan-Hendrix held a 16-14 lead at the close of the third quarter.
The final quarter was a sprint up and down the court. As the buzzer sounded, Hillcrest's Tamara Evans sank the tying basket to send the game into overtime tied at 22-22.
By coach's decision, the overtime was played with sudden death rules, with the team that scored first being the winner.
As the teams scrambled for control of the ball, Evans scored again to seal the win for Hillcrest 24-22.
Evans led Hillcrest with six points. Lauren Pickle and Stevie Howard contributed four points each. Natalie Johnson and Shelby Huskey recorded three points each. Katelyn Hammock and Miranda Doyle closed with two points.
Amy Green led the Lady Hounds with 11 points. Kristin Belcher and Kandice Henson recorded four points each, and Christie Caldwell had three points.
In the junior high girls game, Hillcrest took a 9-1 first-quarter lead.
The junior Lady Eagles increased their lead to 18-4 at the halftime break.
Hillcrest began to drill baskets to take a 29-7 lead at the close of the third quarter and went on to defeat Sloan- Hendrix 37-10.
Kellie Beasley led Hillcrest with 10 points. Samantha Blevins contributed eight points, and Kelsea Sneed had six. Mackenzie Nunnally, Chelsey Howard and Kaylee Hammock each had three points. Chelsea Sneed closed with two points. Sarah Saffell and Elizabeth Rush each added a free throw.
Gennifer Simpson, Emily Ogden, Kayla Griffin and Demi Stephens all recorded two points each for the Lady Greyhounds. Morgan Smith and Sara Childress contributed a free throw each.
Hillcrest grabbed a 9-0 lead over the Lady Greyhounds and increased their lead to 15-4 at halftime.
The Lady Hounds were unable to stop Hillcrest and trailed 21-8 heading into the final quarter. Hillcrest took the win 34-12 over Sloan Hendrix.
Lindsey Crews led Hillcrest with 12 points. Shea Durham added nine points, Erica Highfield contributed five points, and Ashley Mansfield tossed in four. Kathryn Tidwell and Cheyenne Frizzell each had two points.
