Mustangs finish regular
season with win at Piggott

The Hoxie Mustangs made their way to Piggott on Friday night for their final regular season game of the 2007 football season. The Mustangs took the win 28-6 over the Mohawks and will enjoy a week off before hosting a playoff game on Nov. 9.

Hoxie jumped on top 6-0 when Alex Ward scored the first of his three touchdowns on a six-yard run with 10:24 to play in the first quarter.

Ward scored again, on a three-yard run, and added the two-point conversion to give Hoxie a 14-0 lead with 1:51 remaining in the opening quarter.

The second quarter was quiet until 1:41 remained, when Houston Hancock, scored on a three-yard run. Brad Cook kicked the PAT and the Mustangs held a 21-0 halftime lead.

Ward scored on a one-yard run with 6:26 left in the third quarter. Cook made the PAT to increase the Mustangs lead to 28-0.

Piggott scored on a one-yard run with 5:39 to play in the game to avoid the shutout.

Ward recorded 104 yards on 20 carries, and scored three touchdowns. Cook notched 84 yards on nine carries and kicked two PATs. Tyler Thompson had 64 yards on eight carries. Blaine Middlecoff carried three times for 53 yards. Houston Waldrupe closed with 32 yards on nine carries, and Hancock earned 29 yards on five carries and scored a touchdown.

Cade Crisler had a 30-yard kickoff return for the Mustangs.

Defensively, Bradley Williams led Hoxie with 16 tackles. Thompson had 15 tackles and Dylan Maxie had 12. Waldrupe made 11 tackles and Ward had 10. Crisler finished with nine tackles and had an interception. Clay Hart had 11 tackles, recovered a fumble and had an interception.

Hoxie was originally scheduled to face Hughes on Nov. 1, but the Blue Devils were forced to cancel their senior high season due to a lack of players.
