Lady Eagles sweep Twin Rivers

The Hillcrest senior Lady Eagles routed Twin Rivers 61-42 in the opening game of the 2007-2008 basketball season on Oct. 16 at Lynn.

Hillcrest set the tone early by surging to a 26-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Twin Rivers began hitting the boards in the second period and closed the gap, but still trailed 39-26 at halftime.

The Lady Screamin' Eagles relentlessly continued to notch points, taking a 61-31 lead heading in to the final quarter. With the mercy rule in effect, Twin Rivers scored 11 points in the final period to set the final score.

Breanna Doyle led Hillcrest with 17 points. Jessica Broadway added 12 points, and Amber Glenn notched 11. Natalie Johnson closed with 10 points, and Whitney Jones tallied six. Terra Polston hit a three-pointer, and Tamara Evans recorded two points.

The Hillcrest junior high girls opened the evening by defeating the junior Lady Panthers 36-24.

Hillcrest took an 11-8 lead at the close of the first quarter and held a 26-10 halftime lead.

Hillcrest increased their lead to 34-13 after three quarters en route to recording their first win of the season.

Morgan Penn led Hillcrest with 12 points. Chelsea Sneed and Samantha Blevins each totaled six points. Mackenzie Nunnally added four points. Sarah Saffell, Kaylie Hammock, Chelsey Howard and Lindsey Crews each recorded two points.


Hillcrest traveled to Weiner on Friday. The Lady Eagles swept three games from the Lady Cardinals, posting wins in seventh grade, junior high and senior high contests.

In senior girls action, the Lady Screamin' Eagles took a 19-14 lead over the Lady Cardinals at the end of the first quarter, but Weiner slipped into a one-point lead at halftime at 32-31.

The Lady Eagles regained control in the third period and surged to a 54-42 lead. Hillcrest outscored Weiner 20-14 in the final quarter to take a 74-56 victory.

Doyle led Hillcrest with 28 points, five steals and six assists. Broadway had 17 points and eight rebounds. Glenn contributed 10 points, and Johnson notched eight. Jones tossed in five points. Lauren Pickle and Miranda Doyle closed with two points each, and Tamara Evans recorded a free throw.

Hillcrest improved to 2-0 with the win.

The junior Lady Screamin' Eagles started off with a 15-12 lead after the first quarter. Hillcrest continued to hammer the boards and held a 26-19 halftime lead.

The Eagles' held off a Weiner comeback attempt in the third quarter and maintained a 36-32 lead closing the third quarter. The junior Lady Eagles iced the game in the last quarter to seal the 52-42 road victory.

Kelsea Sneed led a well-balanced scoring attack with 11 points. Samantha Blevins contributed 10 points, and Chelsea Sneed notched nine. Nunnally, Kellie Beasley and Saffell closed with six points each, and Morgan Penn added four points.

The junior Lady Eagles improved to 3-0 for the season.

Hillcrest won the seventh grade game 23-10.

Lindsey Crews led Hillcrest with 15 points. Kathryn Tidwell, Shea Durham, Erica Highfield and Sidney Barkley each contributed two points.
